Simple Potato Gratin

  • 2 lb. of potatoes, peeled and sliced into 1/8” slices
  • 3 tbsp. of flour
  • 3 tbsp. of unsalted butter
  • 1 ½ cups of whole milk
  • ½ cup of heavy cream
  • 2 tbsp. of fresh thyme
  • 5 sage leaves
  • 1 clove of garlic
  • ½ tsp. grated nutmeg
  • 1 ¼ cups of gruyere (or Monterey Jack)cheese, grated
  • Salt and pepper


Step 1

Preheat oven to 400 F. Grease a baking dish with some butter. Then, add half of the potato slices in the dish. Set aside.

Step 2

In a saucepan over medium heat, melt the remaining butter. Once melted, add the flour, and stir together for 1 minute. Add the milk, cream, thyme, sage, garlic, nutmeg, salt, and pepper into sauce pan. Stir, and let it simmer for 7 minutes until sauce has thickened. Then, strain the sauce to remove the garlic and herbs.

Step 3

Pour half of the cream sauce on top of the potatoes in the baking dish. Layer the remaining potatoes, and pour over the remaining sauce. Cover with aluminum foil, and bake for 45 minutes.

Step 4

Remove foil, and sprinkle the cheese on top of the dish. Bake for another 15 minutes, until cheese has melted, and is golden brown. Enjoy!
